There are some people you meet during a season of life and never lose touch with, no matter how much time passes.Jerod Haynes is one of those people.Jerod and I attended Hales Franciscan High School on Chicago's South Side, where we were fortunate enough to be members of the 2003 State Championship basketball team—the first state championship in the school's history. Long before cameras, acting roles, or professional careers, we were simply teammates chasing a common goal.Over the years, our paths took us in different directions. Mine led me deeper into photography and visual storytelling. Jerod's led him into acting, theater, and performance. Yet one thing remained the same: a commitment to growth and a willingness to reinvent ourselves.
When Jerod stepped into AXM Studios for this portrait session, the objective wasn't to create traditional headshots. We wanted to create something timeless.Something that felt classic, intentional, and rooted in identity rather than trends. The inspiration came from the great statement portraits that reveal character before they reveal profession. Portraits that allow the viewer to spend time with a person rather than simply look at them.
The black-and-white treatment was a deliberate choice. Without color, the focus shifts to expression, texture, light, and emotion. Every glance, every gesture, every shadow becomes part of the story. Some of the images feel introspective and reflective. Others communicate confidence and presence. Together, they represent a man standing at the threshold of another chapter in his creative journey.
What I appreciate most about Jerod is his ability to evolve while remaining grounded. Whether on the basketball court years ago or now pursuing his craft as a performer, there has always been a quiet confidence about him—a belief that the work matters and that growth never stops. These portraits were created to capture that spirit. Not the actor. Not the resume. The man. The friend. The artist.
This session was different. These images were created in anticipation of what's ahead. And if history is any indication, Jerod will continue to make the most of every opportunity in front of him.

"The best portraits don't tell you who someone is. They invite you to find out."
